LIGHT SHOWERS AT WEEK-END
HEAVY FALLS IN NORTH ISLAND
FIVE DEGREE FROST AT INVERCARGILL
Canterbury and most South Island districts escaped the heavy falls of rain that were experienced throughout the North Island during Saturday, and in the southern provinces only isolated showers were recorded. Showers began early in the morning in Christchurch, but though ominous black clouds settled over some districts, blue sky marked adjacent areas. The clouds dispersed during the day, and later in the afternoon the weather was again brilliantly fine. A cloudburst at 7 a.m. saturated the tennis courts at Wilding Park and delayed play in the New Zealand tennis championships by three hours and a half. In the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday, the rainfall at Harewood was .02in, and in Christchurch it was .04in. Auckland had 3.08 in of rain. Kaitaia 1.14 in, Rotorua lin, New Plymouth 1.35 in, and Wellington .Bin. Blenheim and Westland had .28in and .25in, and Dunedin had only ,03in. After .15in of rain had fallen in Invercargill on Saturday, the weather cleared, and yesterday morning there was a frost of 5 degrees. At 3 p.m. yesterday, the temperature at Harewood was 65.3 degrees, with a strong north-easterly wind contributing to the comparative coolness. Before Saturday’s rain there had been four successive days with temperatures in the eighties and nineties. On Tuesday the maximum temperature was 80.3 degrees, on Wednesday 90.4 degrees. and on Thursday and Friday 86.5 degrees.
