TROTTING Nipalong Has Easy Win In £500 Greymouth Cup

The Methven trainer. C. V. May. won his third race on the West Coast holiday circuit when his own horse. Nipalong, won the Greymouth Cup Handicap, the feature race on the final day of the Greymouth Trotting Club's summer meeting at Victoria Park on Saturday. He won the main handicap on the second day of the Westport meeting with Mrs May’s horse, Banjo, and the Reefton Cup with Nipalong. Nipalong was restrained in about fourth place for most of the race, and raced well in the run home, and beat Spotlight decisively. Camber was only a fair third, Banjo finishing on in fourth place. Nipalong is a five-year-old gelding by the Australian-bred sire. Young Bob, from Bright Nip. He has a useful turn of speed, and should soon extend his record, especially when the class is not too rich. The first leg of the double, the Dominion Handicap, brought a welcome change to the connexions of Carntyne. which had raced well at Reefton and again on the first day of the Greymouth meeting. She carried 18254 10s tickets in a pool of £14,472 10s. The second leg, the County Handicap, was won by the backmarker. Lancewood, which had won earlier in the day in the Runanga Handicap. In spite of his good form at the meeting, Lancewood was at good odds for both his wins, paying £l4 16s 6d on the first occasion and £l5 15s 6d later in the day. The Carntyne—Lancewood doubles combination returned £lO5 15s 6d for £ 1. Spotlight and Beau Cobra were other dual winners at the meeting. One of the most impressive wins was that of Honest Charles in his division of the Railway Handicap. The meeting was held in fine weather before a large crowd. The programme was allowed to lag until the last race was run more than one hour late. Totaliastor investments amounted to £34,407 10s, including £3275 10s on the double, compared with £26,076 last year. The total for the two days was £60,370, compared with £54,870. Nipalong’s Win Nipalong was never far from the leaders in the Greymouth Cup Handicap, and he ran the two miles too solidly for his rivals. Spotlight began best, but there was little pace on for the first six furlongs. At this point. Camber, which had broken at the start, raced round the field to the front. Brigadier Grattan and Spotlight followed Camber with half a mile to run, with Nipalong just behind them. Brigadier Grattan was tiring racing to the straight, where he was behind Camber and Spotlight, with Nipalong making up ground rapidly. Snotlight took the measure of Camber early in the run home, and then Nipalong challenged. He finished very strongly, and won, going away, by a length and a half. Spotlight had a good run over the last mile, and held on for second, well clear of Camber, which beat Banjo by half a length. Johnny Gilbert and Brigadier Grattan were beaten off next, clear of Red Hackle, with another gap to Marionette. Johnny Gilbert did not look likely to take part in the finish at any stage, and his effort was far from impressive. Sprint to Spotlight Spotlight completed a double for the meeting when she finished too well for Camber in the Electric Handicap. Camber went to the front with about one mile 1o run, Spotlight being about four lengths away in sixth place at this point. Spotlight moved up to within about half a length of Camber racing to the straight, where they were followed by Brigadier Giattan, Waverley Hall, and Carntyne, which was moving up quickly. Spotlight and Camber came away from the others oyer the last half-furlong. Spotlight winning by a short length. Camber battled on fairly well for his placing, well clear of Carntyne, which did well to finish so close up after being a way back with half a mile to run. The Gore-owned and trained Waverley Hall had every chance, and was a neck back in fourth place, a nose in front of Brigadier Grattan. They were clear of Charlotte Bell and Crown Jewel, which headed the others. Cherry Queen. Nona Grattan, Banjo. Grattan Bay, Johnny Gilbert, and Roval Leaf lost their chances at the start.
