CANOE VOYAGE DOWN RIVER
40 Scouts Arrive At Wanganui
TEN OF PARTY FROM CHRISTCHURCH
(New Zealand. Press Association) WANGANUI, January 8. After a 10-day trip down the Wanganui river, 40 scouts arrived in Wanganui on Saturday afternoon. Starting from Taumarunui, they came down the river in 24 canoes. ‘ They explored the surrounding country on the way. Although the scouts had a number of spills, and several canoes were damaged, no-one was injured, no equipment was lost in the water, and none of the canoes was damaged beyond repair.
The weather generally was good for zanoeing and camping, with light winds, warm temperatures, and overcast skies.
Led by Mr L. M. Fairbrother, district headquarters controller of senior scouts from Wellington, the party comprised senior scouts from many parts of New Zealand, including 10 from Christchurch and 17 from Wanganui. Only about six had been down the Wanganui river before.
The standard of scouting was very high on the trip, said Mr Fairbrother. This was mainly because only the best scouts were representing their centres. An official welcome was tendered to the scouts by the Mayor of Wanganui (Mr E. A. Millward).
