FOUR MEN EACH FINED £2O (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. January 6. Four Aucklanders in a drinking party at the Waikato township of Matangi on Boxing Day s|ole six fowls, a sheep, a plateful of scones and some fruit because they were hungry and thought food a "good idea.” This was stated today in the Magistrate’s Court. Senior-Detective H. M. Holmes said the four decided first that chicken would be a good idea. They raided a poultry farm, stole the six birds, and left the gate open, allowing 13 others to escape. Then they thought lamb would go well with the chicken, and went in a truck and killed a sheep. They then saw a house with an open door and took the scones and fruit. The men, who pleaded guilty to stealing the food, were Thomas John Rowe, aged 30. a fitter. Mason Brooking. aged 21. a labourer: Googie Wano, aged 18. a labourer: and Pekama Ngatai. aged 19. They admitted joint criarges of theft of the fowls and sheep Brooking and Wano also admitted the joint theft of the fruit and scones. All expressed regret and attributed the fault to liquor. Mr H Jenner Wily. S.M.. fined each and ordered each man to pay £2 10s in restitution.
