ROADING AND DRAINAGE
Sir, —I am absolutely shocked at the colossal wastage of the ratepayers’ money. Here is an example: Not very long ago the east end of Fendalton road by Hagley Park was widened. The road and footpath were all newly tar-sealed. Within a few days the new work was dug up for the sewer. Surely it would have been quite easy to have asphalted the pavement after the drainage work had been completed. And who pays for the extra tar-sealing? Why can we not have more co-ordina-tion?—Yours, etc., FUTURE RATEPAYER. December 29, 1955. I “At the time of the council carrying out its work, the Christchurch Drainage Board had not made a decision to lay an additional sewer main in Fendalton road,” said the Waimairi county clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) when this letter was referred to him. ‘‘The board had earlier installed a new siphon at the Fendalton road bridge, which it was felt would relieve the overloaded sewer mains in this area. The board has now found that this work has not completely relieved the position, and because of the rapidly expanding housing area to the northwest, it has found it necessary to proceed immediately with the laying of an additional sewer main to relieve the existing overloaded mains. The council had completed the widening and sealing of this length of Fendallon road in March. 1955.”]
