THEFT OF SHIRT FROM SHOP
MAN SENT TO PRISON A man who admitted stealing a shirt valued at £4 15s from a shop was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by Mr Raymond Ferner. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was Basil Hodgson, aged 48. a labourer, and the charge to which he pleaded guilty was that on January 5 he stole the shirt, the property of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury. Ltd. Sub-Inspector J. J. Halcrow said that an assistant in the men’s wear department saw Hodgson look at shirts, pick one up, put it under his coat, and hurry from the store. This was at 2.45 p.m. The accused was chased along Cashel street, and was caught at the Manchester street intersection When he was questioned, he pulled the shirt from under his coat, handed it back, and made off. but Constable Gates intercepted him. The accused was under the influence of liquor at the time. He had 52 previous convictions for a variety of offences. Hodgson told the Court that he drank far too much, and then did not know what he was doing. IDLE AND DISORDERLY . Ernest George Edwards, aged 19, a labourer, who appeared for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. “Edwards, you ought not to get yourself into a predicament of this kind,” said the Magistrate. “It is due only to your own carelessness and improvidence. The Probation Officer has arranged board and a job for you. You must go to them, and see that yem remain in employment, for it won't do for you to come before the
Court again. You are being given an opportunity. Take it." . SHIP DESERTION Brian Ayton. aged 20. a ship’s steward, pleaded guilty to deserting from the ship Rangitiki at Wellington on November 19, 1955. He was ordered to be detained for one month and to be deported. Mr J. R. Woodward appeared for the shipping company. REMANDED Ngaire Hayman, aged 19. and Margaret Lydia Martin, aged 17. both factory hands, were remanded to January u °n a c riarge that on January 5 each obtained credit by fraud in incurring a debt of 5s for a meal at the Theatre Royal Cafe. Arnold Leslie Burnett, aged. 36. a labourer (Mr J. R. Woodward), was remanded by consent to January 16 or. a charge that on December 21 at Kairaki he stole a cooker and a primus, valued at.£7, the property of John Henry Castell. He was allowed bail of £5O. with one surety of £5O. on condition that he reports daily to the police.
