Dutch Flag—Big Ben For Kurow Double

RACING

Dutch Flag and Big Ben. both winners at Oamaru on Tuesday, will be a popular combination for the Kurow Cup and the Hakataramea Hack Hancicap. the totalizator double at the Kurow Jockey Club's annual meeting tomorrow.

Dutch Flag is top weight with 9-0 in the Kurow Cup. He carried 111 b less at Oamaru, where he led for the last mile after losing ground at the start. That success by Mr C. Kain’s Peak Halyard gelding was well earned. It followed a string of creditable minor placincs which included a second to Mighty Dollar in the Members’ Handicap at Riccarton. and a third behind Mighty Dollar and Avenge in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. Royal Voyage and Rudolph, fourth and fifth in the President's Handicap at Oamaru. will oppose Dutch Flag again. Royal Voyage made a late run from the tail of the field for his placing, but ran past beaten horses and came too late to get within challenging distance of Dutch Flag. Rudolph had his chance at Oamaru. but failed to muster finishing speed to get into the picture after getting a good run behind the leaders. Improvement will be necessary on his Oamaru run to give him his second successive win in the race. He won under 7-8 last year. He carried 7-12 at Oamaru. and has 7-9 tomorrow. Dahlia has done most of her racing over sprint distances, and it was as a sprinter that she did her earlier holidav racing, with success. She was a picture of condition at Waikouaiti and Oamaru. and won on each day. During a busy campaign last season she was placed over nine furlongs in hack class, and in her present form she should not find one mile and a quarter beyond her ability on the Kurow track.

Bon Soir was a disappointment in the Waikouaiti Cup. His moderate run there came after a close second to Scuppered in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap six days earlier. On Waikouaiti form, he should be safely held by the Oamaru-trained Cornflake, which beat all but Watch and Wait •nd Saba in the Cup. He should be a first-class prospect to fill one of the places, and. at the weights, he might be a dangerous opponent for Dutch Flag. Naval Treaty's fourth on the second day of the South Canterbury meeting was the performance of an improver. He is now five, and his best performances may be close at hand. The Second Leg Teko. also on the minimum, is engaged in the Hakataramea Hack Handicap He is top weight with 9-4 in the second leg. At Oamaru on Tuesday he carried 9-0 into second place behind Merrimayes. after sharing the pacemaking for nearly six furlongs. On his present form, Teko appears

likely to make Big Ben work hard for victory.

Royal Oak. Helm, and Marette are other double acceptors in the second leg. The programmes decided for each of them will have a bearing on betting on the race, because they have raced prominently lately.

Royal Oak was third over 81 furlongs at Waikouaiti on Monday. "Helm filled the same position behind Kansas and Keep Time in the Fairlie Handicap. six furlongs, at Washdyke on December 24. And Marette showed good speed when she effortlessly beat a novice field at Greymouth in November.

The Domett High-weight gives the Riccarton-trained Sole Mio a first-class chance of winning his second race in five days. Mr L. W. Timperley’s five-year-old Sun King gelding scored soundly in the, corresponding race at Oamaru on Tuesday, holding a length lead at the end of a mile and a quarter after doing all the pacemaking. Decipher, which got closest to him, is not in this field.

Tomorrow, Sole Mio will carry 81b over a furlong shorter ground. The form of the others is not promising. The Washdyke pair. De Bracey and El Capitan, have been the best nf them, and if any one but either of these two beats Sole Mio the odds will be great. Reporter has been scratched for the T. A. Munro Hack Handicap.
