FIRST DAY OF MEETING

W. R. BUTT HAS FOUR WINS

The Templeton trainer, W. R. Butt, won four races on the first day of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Addington on Saturday, with Margaret Scott, Merry Gold, Lady Baffelan and Surfman. He was unlucky in the Au Revoir Handicap with Rowan Star, which did not get clear until 50 yards from the post. But for that she would have been placed. Kingsdown Direfit, another member of Butt’s team, finished third in his race.

One of the most impressive wins during the day was that of Don Hall in the Charles Cross Stakes. He tangled at the start, but was soon into his stride. He was within four lengths of the pacemaker, Malabella, at the end of a furlong. Don Hall worked clear with three and a half furlongs to run, and he won, easing up, by 10 lengths after pacing the mile and five furlongs in the very good time of 3min 28sec.

La Mignon, which lost a lot of ground at the start, finshed on for second, ahead of Great Dillon. Dresden Lady, and Super Brigade. Super Nurse caused a surprise in the first leg of the double, the Mason Handicap, the second leg, the Selwyn Handicap, being won by Surftnan. The combination returned £216 5s for £l. The . meeting was held in fine weather, but the day was spoiled by a strong easterly wind. There was a fair attendance. Totalisator Investments amounted to £102.987 10s, including £9895 10s on the double, compared with £112,945 15s last year.

R. W. Townlev, driver of Super Brigade in the Charles Cross Stakes, w i as fined £lO for careless driving. It was found that he checked La Mignon with six furlongs to run. Results:—
