DEATH SENTENCE IN SAMOA

A Samoan, Moke Fuimaono Taala. aged 29. was sentenced to death last night after being found guilty of the murder of a poli e constable. Fa Helen Lavasii, at Poutasi on September 27. The trial before Chief Judge C. C. Marsack and four assessors lasted 10 days and was one of the longest in judicial history in Samoa. Two Europeans and two Samoan assessors reached their verdict shortly before 8 p.m. after having retired late in the afternoon. After the verdict was announced the accused said in a firm voice that he accepted the Court's verdict but reaffirmed his innocence. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the Governor-General of New Zealand.
