ATHLETICS FIVE RECORDS BROKEN

U.S. ATHLETES AT NAPIER 220, 880 AND SHOT PUT TO VISITORS (New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, Dec. 26. The three touring American athletes each broke a New Zealand record in a day of record breaking at Napier today. About 4000 persons at McLean Park saw new national figures set for the 220 yards, the 880 yards, and the shot put. They also saw the 100 yards equalled and the New Zealand resident records for the women's javelin throw and the men’s discus broken. The track was hard, in spite of overnight showers. The sun shone through clouds during the meeting. The visiting sprinter. Bob Morrow, chased by the New Zealand champion, M. Rae, from Auckland, covered the 100 yards in 9.6 seconds, to equal the national record held jointly by the Australians J. Treloar and H. Hogan. Morrow also won the 220 yards in 21sec, taking a fifth of a second off D. R. Batten s national record. He took the lead from Rae near the bend and streaked across the line three Harris ahead of Rae.

Lon Spurrier outclassed the national champion, W. Baillie, in the half-mile. Spurrier sped into an early lead and with a long, effortless stride crossed the line more than 40 yards clear of Baillie in Imin X enth of a sec ond faster than D. M.
