OTAGO COUNTRY’ TEAM

SUCCESS IN MATCH WITH CANTERBURY ELEVEN An Otago Sub-associations’ team, after dismissing a Canterbury eleven for* 155 runs in the first innings of a match which began at Hagley Oval yesterday, did well to score 133 runs for the loss of five wickets before the close of play. s The Canterbury side, which included many senior plavers. failed to make use of a pitch which played easily, ahd the betting generally was disappointing. The onlv batsman who showed much confidence was G. T. Dowling, vice-captain of the New Zealand Colts team to tour Australia. He scored 60. and G. Fraser plaved patiently for 40. Most of the Otago bowlers should have presented few problems, for after a feu overs they bowled short of a lencth, but the outstanding exception was A. Blakely, a capable leg spinner, who has met with success on previous visits to Christchurch Elakely bowled a tempting length to finish with the impressive figures of seven wickets for 39 runs off 24 overs, Inrluc’ing two excellent catches off his own bowline

C. Johnson, a medium-nace bowler, gave Otago a good start when he took the first two wickets before the total reached 10. and further success came when Blakely bowled Craig, to make three wickets down for 12 runs. Fraser, an opening batsman, was joined by Dowlihe in a good partnership which added 86 n ’”S- Aftpr a slow start they batted well, with Dowling scoring freely with some forceful square cuts. Fraser also showed some enterprise with forceful strokes all round the wicket. Both batsmen fell to Blakely, and after their dismissal the only natsman to reach double figures was A. Pearce, who scored a brisk 24. Most of Otago's runs came from a productive partnership between S. McKnight. who scored 66. and S Dunn, who assisted £» P !! b &^ ith . 34 ‘ McKnight. although a hard-hitting batsman, controlled bis shots and provided some entertaining cricket. They placed the side in a fairly - nund position for a first innings lead A " unusual feature of Otago’s innings was the loss to leg-before-wicket decisions of *° ur wickets of the five which fell The most successful of the Canterbury howlers was W. M. Duncan, who took two wickets with some accurate and good length bowling. The umpires are Messrs A. Liddicoat and A. L. Winter. Scores:—
