OPEN GAME AT AUCKLAND

R. W. BLAIR TAKES 11 WICKETS

MATCH WITH CENTRAL DISTRICTS

(New Zeatana Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 26

After two days play the outcome of the Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Central Districts at Eden Park is doubtful. With a full day left tomorrow. Central Dstricts still needs 195 runs to win with n«ne second innings wickets stand ing.

The teams’ fortunes have switched amazingly over the two days. Auckland began well on Saturday, scored 45 runs before losing its first wicket and then slumped badly to be out for 135 Central Districts lost only two first ihnincs wickets in passing the Auckland score, but the team was out for 191. 56 runs ahead. The last Central Districts’ wicket in this innings fell at the first ball of today’s play Auckland started its second innings brightly and had scored 161 for four wickets today before another slightly slower procession of dismissed batsmen started. The eighth wicket fall at 218 an a the tail enders boosted the total to 265 Central Districts lost E. M. Mueli top-scorer with 75 in the first innings soon after its second inn ; ngs started this evening and had scored 15 for one wicket at stumps. With wickets fallin? so quickly, play on the two days has been rarely dull. The batting however, has not reached a very high standard Auckland’s first innines was notable for a solid openin? partnership by D. L. Perry (21» and J K Everest (22). After that only the all-rounder, T. S. Hambrook, added any dignity to the batting and his 50. although it contained two chances, saved the home team from absolute ruin R. W. Blair and D. R. Tarrant shared most of the wickets. Blair returning to accurate form after a poor opening spell. Meuli and K. F. Smith batted so confidently when Central D’stricts started its first innings that it appeared that the w*»ak Auckland bowling was in for a thrashing. Smith. D Bowden and then Meuli were run out and Lissette, the tall, slow left-arm bowler, helned to dispose of the rest. Auckland’s second innings batting today was much more resolute. Perry (52) and Everest (39) again eave the team a good start. B. J. Postles built on this with a sound 41 and later G A. Richards. B. Sorenson and J. Turnbull made useful scores. Blair, who took four wickets in the first innings, was much more impressive today. His seven wickets were rather costly. but he showed an occasional glimpse of real speea. D. D. Beard gave Blair great assistance in both innings Scores:—
