BOXING
HALAFIHI BEATS FARTHING
BOUTS END AFTER SIXTH ROUND
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 9. The Tongan light-heavy-weight boxer, Johnny Halafihi, last night beat Bruce Farthing, of Australia, by a technical knockout after the bell had ended the sixth round. The two men struck each other after the bell, and Halafihi hit Farthing with what looked to be a light right. Halafihi then appealed to the referee (Mr E. C. Armishaw) against Farthing, who hit him twice more. Mr Armishaw separated them, and Farthing, who was within a couple of yards of his corner, turned toward him. Suddenlv he collapsed to the floor. Farthing’s seconds immediately appealed that a foul blow had been struck. Mr Armishaw refused to heed the appeal, and returned to his own corner. Farthing with difficultv was lifted on to his seat and given treatment with cold sponges. The bell soon rang for the seventh round, and Halafihi advanced into the middle of the ring, but there was no fight left in Farthing. Halafihi had the better of the fight throughout. Medical opinion was that Farthing collapsed at the end.of the fight, and this, it was considered, did not result from any single punch at the end of the round.
