ASSAULT ON WOMAN
VICTIM ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL POLICE SEARCHING FOR ASSAILANT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 9. A 62-year-old widow was assaulted late last night at Naenae, Lower Hutt. She was admitted to the Hutt Hospital suffering from shock and bruises. Her condition today was reported to be satisfactory. She had alighted from an electric unit at the Naenae railway station at 11.30 p.m. and was walking along Waiters street when she noticed a man about 100 paces ahead. He disappeared, and she thought he had gone into a nearby house. As she passed a high hedge alongside the footpath the man jumped out and forced her to the ground. He punched her badly about the face. Residents in the locality were awakened by the woman’s screams, and several rushed to her assistance, but the assailant had disappeared. An intensive police search was made throughout the night and was continued today by both the uniformed branch and detectives.
