ART EXHIBITION AT KAIKOURA
PAINTINGS BY SYDNEY L. THOMPSON
A successful exhibition of paintings by Sydney L. Thompson, which was held during the week in the Kaikoura War Memorial Community Centre, concluded last evening. The exhibition was sponsored by the recently formed Kaikoura Art Group. There was also on display a special loan collection of art reproductions. About 150 persons, including visitors from the North Canterbury and Blenheim districts, attended the opening on Tuesday. Mr H. J. Hewson, chairman of the Kaikoura County Council, presided. An address entitled “Pictures for Pleasure,” was given by Mr R. Beauchamp, Christchurch, who declared the exhibition open. On Wednesday and yesterday talks on art were given by the Rev. Ross H. Dalby, while on Thursday, the Rev. Father W. J. Walsh Spoke. Groups of pupils from the Kaikoura District High School and other district schools were conducted through the exhibition on Wednesday and Thursday and talks were given them by Miss Cora Wilding, organiser of the art group, and Mr J. Thompson. The Kaikoura Art Grouo plans a display of Japanese woodcuts in the winter and an exhibition of local work in the spring.
