N.Z. ESTATES IN SAMOA

RECORD PROFIT LAST YEAR (New Zealand Press Association) APIA, December, 1. New Zealand reparation estates in Western Samoa have made net profits totalling more than £1,000,000 in the last twelve years. The million mark was passed with a record annual profit of £ 157,000 for 1954-55. This was announced today by the general manager (Mr D. R. A. Eden), who is to retire next year. The reparation estates are former German plantations given to the New Zealand Government after World War I. They have operated at a profit since 1932, when Mr F._ L. A. Gotz, now member Parliament for Manukau, was general manager. In the past-war period, much of thfc estates’ profit had been given back to Samoa in the form of social services.
