SITTING OF NO. 9 AUTHORITY

An amendment to his goods service licence to authorise the cartage of peas and pea vines as a sub-contractor to Musgrove Brothers, was granted to John Mair, of Bryndwr (Mr J. S. Haywood), at a sitting of the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. A. Bretherton). The application was in respect of one vehicle authority formerly restricted to the cartage of sawn timber and joinery ownea by R. McLean, a timber merchant. It was stated that the contract with Musgrove Brothers would begin today, and there was every likelihood of the work continuing for three months. The application was granted to cover the months December to February inclusive, as sought. The same applicant was also granted an application for the amendment of another goods service licence by the addition of one vehicle authority for the carriage of general goods in the No. 9 district. Huntly Graeme Marshall, of Duvauchelle (Mr Haywood), was granted a new goods service licence with one vehicle authority in the No. 9 district for the carriage of heavy plant and civil engineering materials. T. P. Gilroy, a heavy transport operator (Mr R. A. Young), opposed the application, and to satisfy his objection the Authority stipulated that the two f >arties should enter into a contract imiting the applicant’s operations to the Wairewa and Akaroa counties. Frederick Sydney Blogg, of Addington, trading as Blogg Brothers (Mr Haywood) was granted a new goods service licence with one- vehicle authority in the No. 9 district, for the transport of shingle, sand, rock and spoil. Richard Russell Price, of New Brighton (Mr Haywood) was granted an amendment to his goods service licence by the addition of one vehicle authority in the No. 9 district, for the cartage of logs. He did not seek exemption fi*om the railway protection restrictions. Four Additional Vehicle Authorities. Four additional vehicle authorities under the same terms and conditions as those in the applicants’ existing licence were granted to John Ryan, Bernard Ryan and William Joseph Ryan, trading as Ryan Brothers, of New Brighton (Mr R. A. Young). Mr Haywood, for the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, and Mr A. S. ' Roberts, secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union, made submissions about what they said were the appli- ■ cants’ breaches of the law regarding drivers’ wages, unduly long working ■ hours and the use of unlicensed ser- ■ "Vices, and Mr J. A similar 1 application by Baylis Bros. (Leeston), Ltd. ■ (Mr. Haywood), for one additional vehicle authority was adjourned for further evidence to be heard next week.

One additional vehicle authority only was granted to H. S. Righton Ltd., of Christchurch (Mr Haywood) who sought the addition to its licence of two authorities for the carriage of general goods in the No. 9 district.
