ARMED FORCES’ SHOOTING

TRENTHAM TITLE MEETING (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2.

Machine-guns, rifles, and revolvers will resound at Trentham from February 13 to February 17 when the second combined services’ small arms meeting in 26 years is held. Entries last year, when the fixture was held for the first time since 1930, totalled 191, and more are expected this time.

Major trophies are the Colvin Cup, for competition by rifle teams of the three services; the Stafford Challenge Shield, for the best territorial infantry battalion small arms team; and the Queen’s Medals, for the champion rifle shots of each service.

The Colvin Cup was presented to the 6th New Zealand Mounted Rifles by Lieutenant-Colonel Forester Colvin, of the 9th Queen’s Royal Lancers, to commemorate their service together in 1900-02 in South Africa.

The Stafford Shield was presented by the Mayor, councillors, and people of Stafford, England, to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade to commemorate the kindly feelings of the townspeople towards the New Zealanders who were stationed in Brockton Camp during World War I.
