CHOOSING AN OCCUPATION

Education Department Booklet’s Advice

“Choosing an occupation should be a gradual process, not just a sudden event. As you find out more about the jobs open to you, you will see how your ideas develop and how they keep pace with your progress at school. Your plans and your school preparation should then lead to a satisfying job,” says the introduction to “Next Year 1956,” a booklet issued by the Education Department containing “some information for boys and girls transferring to a post-primary school or leaving schooL The booklet is divided into two parts. The first section shows how courses at post-primary schools are built up, the examinations that may be sat and avenues of financial assistance that are open to post-primary school pupils. The second section gives “information that will help you when you think about your future occupation and the way to prepare ’or it.” It lists a large number of obs and places of training and links hese with information about education and examinations. The booklet emphasises its own limitations as well as its usefulness. It says: “after all it is for you and your parents to work out the plans for your education and vour future job.”
