POLIOMYELITIS CASES IN OTAGO
SECOND DEATH OCCURS (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 30. Five new positive cases of poliomyelitis have been diagnosed during the last 24 hours in the Otago health district. One patient, a young woman of 19, from Macandrews Bay, was admitted to the Dunedin Public Hospital yesterday and died last night. All the others are from the city or the Ber-wick-Outram districts. Several of the new positive cases have been in the hospital for some days. Forty-five cases have been notified in Otago since the disease first became prevalent about the end of last month. The health authorities emphasise that this number of cases in a population of about 145,000 does not represent an epidemic. Two deaths have now occurred in the province, seven patients have been discharged, and 36 remain in hospital.
