Antarctic Amateur Radio Station

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 22. A team of British scientists who leave today for the Antarctic have invited the worlds’ radio “hams” to try to pick up messages from an amateur radio station they intend to set up near the South Pole. The radio specialist of the party, 33-year-old Major G. E. Watson, of the Royal Engineers, a licensed amateur radio operator, said that the proposed station had not yet been allocated a call sign. The expedition will leave London in the 540-ton motor vessel Tottan. manned by a Norwegian crew. • The expedition plans to set up a base at Vahsel Bay, as one of 22 international geophysical stations being set up on the Antarctic mainland. The radio station is expected to be on the air in February.
