BRITISH RAILWAY UNIONS WANT WAGE RISE

Two railway unions, representing nearly 500.000 workers, have decided to press for substantial wage increases from the British Transport Commission, operators of the State-owned railways. The leaders of the 370,000-strong National Union of Railwaymen said they had served on the commission a demand for an all-round wage increase of 10 per cent. Earlier, the Transport and Salaried Staffs’ Association, speaking for about 190,000 clerical and administrative rail workers, decided to press for a 7j per cent, pay rise.
