ADDINGTON MARKET

BIG YARDING OF FAT CATTLE

Sharp Decline In Price EWES FAIRLY STABLE There was a shaiy drop in fat cattle prices at the Addington market yes- ! terday. For the second week in sue- i cession there was a entry of more ■ than 600 head which proved too much 1 for the market to absorb at anything like steady rates. A general decline ! set in of £3 to £4 a head. There were heavily reduced yard- i ings of fat sheep and, though values i for ewes were mostly stable, those for 1 wethers were down somewhat on last 1 week, except over the concluding , stages. Because of the absence of the usual i buying strength from freezing works. ■ a heavily-stocked fat lamb market sagged sharply. A small entry of store sheep sold < at close to late rates. STORE SHEEP Store, sheep numbers declined sharply, I particularly in the hogget section, and ’ dadtt n< * bee* l for more than 1000 ' Chathams Islands sheep there would also have been only a handful of sheep in the older sheep section. For the small wether and ewe hogget ' offering prices may have been a shade 1 easier, but for at least one consignment of sheep similar to those yarded last week there was little difference in rates Ewe hoggets realised up to 745, the price < Rodney® from E. FAT SHEEP Yardings of fat sheep fell heavily from 6897 last week to 4044. Wethers were back by as much as 3s a head on last week’s values, except over the concluding stages when prices firmed to finish on a par with those of last week. Ewes in the main had a reasonably sound sale, much on a par with that of last week. Buyers for all classes of fat sheep were inclined to be selective, and there were some passings. The market for wethers was topped by F. G. Francis (Waikari), with a sale of seven at 77s Id, and wether hogget values may be gauged from the sale of lines of 131 from F. Horan (Ashburton), which made from 61s Id to 63s Id, and 38 from H. May and Company, which changed hands from 67s Id to 69s Id. For ewes, two vendors were paid 35s Id, H C. STORE CATTLE The store cattle entry was not large and included a spinkling of good cattle, but the market remained dull pending a worth-while fall of rain to improve the feed outlook. Quotable sales were: on account of D W. Smith (Cheviot), 54 three-year-Oid-Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus i cross steers at £22 13s fid to £3l 13s 6d: D. W Ensor (Cheviot), 10 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross 14-months steers at £l7 6s. and 15 heifers of the same breeding at £l7 6s; on account ot clients. 10 three-year-old Hereford steers at £26 8s 6d, 7 three-year-old Hereford and Aberdeen Angus cross steers at £27 3s fid. DAIRY CATTLE A small entry of about 30 head faced buyers in the dairy cattle section, and while the attendance at the sale was small, the demand was a little better than last week, with prices for both cows and heifers picking up 20s to 30s a head. In the selection were five advertised Friesian heifers, which made from £22 to £37. The balance of the offering was of mixed quality. The cows sold from £lO to £2O. with one sale at £25 10s. Apart from the advertised line, the few heifers on offer sold from £l4 to £lB. VEALERS The market for vealers was a better one, with a supply more in line with requirements and values improved by about £1 a head. Quality was described as good. Large runners realised from £22 to £25 Is. good large vealers £lB to £2l. good lighter vealers £l4 to £lB. good smaller vealers, £ll to £l3 IBs 6d, good small calves off the mothers £6 to £9 18s 6d. good smaller calves £3 to £5 18s 6d, and rougher vealers £3 to £l3 18s fid. FAT PIGS The entry in the porker section was easily the largest this season, and included four trucks from outside districts. The quality of the offering was not quite so good, too many over-fat tynes and heavy-weights being entered. The sale opened with an easing of 3s to 4s pfer head, and as it progressed values eased further and were 10s to 15s below last week’s rates. In the bacon entrv, all medium-weight pigs met good competition. but the over-weight and fattish types were unsaleable. Choppers again came forward in very large numbers, but the sale was better by 10s to £1 a head. Values were:— Light porkers. £5 9s fid to £6 12s fid. Medium porkers. £6 14s fid to £7 2s fid. Heavy, £7 4s 6d to £7 14s fid. Choppers. £5 3s M to £l3 3s 6d. Light baconers. £8 9s fid to £9 2s fid. Medium, £9 10s 6d to £lO 10s fid. Heavy baconers. £lO 12s 6d to £ll Is fid. Over-weights. £7 14s 6d to £8 Is fid. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was smaller and quality was not nearly so good. At the beginning of the sale there was a very small attendance of buyers, and values eased by 10s to 15s per head. As the sale progressed, however, more buyers arrived and prices recovered slightly. Included in the entry were four in-sow pigs which made from £ll to £l4. Values were:— Small weaners. 45s to 525. Best weaners, 60s to 70s. Slips, 75s to 85s. Small and medium stores. 90s to 100 s. Large stores, to 108 s. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 23. Heavy entries in all sections were again yarded at the Burnside sale today. The yarding of baconers was probably the largest seen at Burnside for many years, this no doubt being due to the high prices which have been ruling for some weeks and particularly at last week’s sale. Prices generally for the better class of ox beef in the fat cattle section could be quoted on a par to £1 cheaper, but for plain and ordinary sorts prices were down by 30s to £2 a head. Cows and heifers had rather a poor display, and prices were below those of last week’s sale. In the fat sheep section there was again a large offering, with about 2800 sheep. The bulk of the yarding was made up of wethers, with a limited number of ewes. The quality of the wethers was good, and they appeared to be 2s to 3s easier. Ewes had a fair inquiry and prices showed little alteration from last week. The 90 spring lambs offered were probably the best for the season, and prices were better by 3s to 4s a head. The offering of store cattle was one of the best at Burnside for the season. There is still a fairly good demand for fresh conditioned well-bred steers, but ordinary sorts, especially the younger class, have shown the biggest drop since last Baconers had a particularly large offering'. while porkers were not by any means over-supplied. The high prices, which were ruling last week, were not in evidence. although good prices were secured. There was an easing in values for baconers of 7s to 10s a head, and porkers were a shade easier
