STATE AID TO SCHOOLS
ROMAN CATHOLIC MOVE
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH’S COMMENT
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23.
“It was quite gratuitous for the Auckland branch of the Holy Name Society to petition Parliament for a ‘just disbursement’ of taxation to cover the cost of secular education in Roman Catholic schools and all other private schools,” said the Rev. J. S. Somerville, convener of the Presbyterian Assembly’s public questions committee and >oard of education, commenting today on a Press Association message from Auckland. Mr Somerville said that the Presbyterian attitude to State aid was quite clear, and Presbyterian colleges had no intention of asking for the kind of assistance indicated. Aid in kind was received by all church schools for many needs under the curriculum, but it was generally nuite impossible to separate the secular from other aspects of school life. He added that church schools had to maintain a high standard of “secular” education, not merely to satisfy the State, but to exist. The capital charges in the establishment and maintenance of ■ hurch schools were the church’s concern.
