REGISTRATION FEES FOR DOGS

WAIMAIRI COUNTY RATES “I know a lot of people with sheep dogs, and those dogs are the worst worriers of all—not on their property, but on their neighbours’ properties,” said Cr. L. P. Sisson, when the Waimairi County Council discussed recommendations of its finance committee that the fees for dog registrations be 5s for working dogs and £1 for domestic dogs. Cr. Sisson moved that the fee for domestic dogs be reduced to 15s, but his motion lapsed for want of a seconder. The chairman of the finance committee (Cr. A. L. Haslam), said the fee of £1 had been decided upon as “a good round figure—a workable sum.” “What about a rabbit dog?” asked Cr. E. R. Stead. “A good rabbit dog is as valuable an asset as a working dog.” The County Clerk (Mr K. McLachlan) said that only dogs used solely as working dogs by shepherds, drovers, farmers or rabbiters employed by rabbit boards were to be charged the rate for working dogs, except that working dogs used for unspecified purposes could be charged at the working rate by special resolution of the council.
