ROWING

NEW RULE SOUGHT ON UMPIRING DECISION BY CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION A remit will be sent to the meeting of the New Zealand Rowing Association next Saturday from the Canterbury Rowing Association, Proposing that a rule be made prohibiting an umpire from driving a launch while performing his duties. This was decided at a meeting of the Canterbury association last evening. Members held that an umpire could not adequately carry out his duties if his attention was divided between controlling his craft and umpiring a race. It was decided to open the rowing season with a gala on Saturday. November 12. The gala will be held on the Avon near the Avon club’s sheds, and will include a procession of decorated boats, a performance by "Dark Town" crews, a procession of eight-oar boats, and a short race for eights. A race for universitv women in fours will be held, and there will be a tug-of-war in the river. Launch trins will be run for children. The Union. Avon, and University .clubs arc' expected to take part in the gala, as well as Christ’s College. Xavier College, Boys’ High School, and St. Andrew's College. The following season’s programme was approved December 10 and 11, Kerr’s Reach pennants competition at Kerr’s Reach; December 3. head of the river doubles: December 17. head of the river fours: February 4, Christchurch regatta at Stewart’s Gully; January 28, Timaru regatta, at Timaru.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ ASSOCIATION

FORMATION PROPOSED Subject to the approval of headmasters, it has been decided to form a Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Rowing Association. -A meeting held at Christ’s College recently was attended by representatives of the Christchurch Boys’ High School and St. Andrew’s College, as well as the president and secretary of the Canterbury Rowing Association and members of clubs sponsoring school rowing. “The move will be supported strongly by the Canterbury association,” said the president of that association (Mr W. H. Candy). He said it was intended to run the new association on the lines of the Auckland school association, which was formed several years ago. It was likely to assist rowing in Canterbury clubs, because of the larger number of boys who would be introduced to the sport.
