RACING WATKINS HANDICAP AT TRENTHAM

Ocean Flight Has Good Prospects

Field Chief, one of three South Island horses in the field, was scratched yesterday for the Watkins Handicap, the first leg of the double on the second day of the spring meeting at Trentham today. Ocean Flight and Josudi are the •tiier southerners in the field, and Ocean Flight may be the favourite. A close fifth in the Wellington Handicap last week. Ocean Flight was improved by that race, his first since the Grand National meeting in August. Nottingham, which may be the most heavily-backed North Island horse, is now to be ridden by N. B. Holland, not J. A. McFarlane. Nottingham, a rather unlucky third in the Wellington Handicap, is a four-year-old entire by Goodfellow from Brown Lace trained at Levin by C. F. Mora for Mr A. J. McGrath. Dormant was an unlikely runner yesterday; he has been sore during the week. It will be bad luck for his connexions if he is not at his best because he would have shown early improvement on his Wellington Handicap sixth. Takatu, top weight with 9st 101 b. is not certain to start He . is carrying a lot of - condition, and his trainer, T. F. Verner, is anxious to run the Revelation gelding, but the decision will rest with the owner. Sir Ernest Davis. Takatu is to come on to Riccarton to be prepared for the New Zealand Cup next month. Riccarton Sprinter Scratched The Riccarton-trained Watch and Wait was scratched yesterday for the Awatea Handicap, the second leg of the double. Fair Chance will strengthen in favour now that the smart Riccarton mare has dropped out of the field. Fair Chance has lOst to master, but, given reasonable luck, his class should carry him through. y* J* Broughton will ride either Privy Council or the three-year-old Court Jester. Nothing final had been arranged yesterday, but if he took the mount on Court Jester he would ride about 51b overweight k Council was fifth in the Shorts Handicap last week. He is bracketed with the three-year-old Great Seal, a fair sixth in the Wellington Guineas. a light-weight newcomer in this field, will be ridden by A C. Messervy, not A. J. Stokes. Entwine is a doubtful starter for the Desert Gold Stakes, in which she is bracketed with Glenlyn, a sister to the New Zealand Oaks winner, Glenlee. Starts for all the others seem certain and in a field of more than twenty S?** 1 Tess, Can-Can, Bag, and Gentle Lu may be most heavily supported. McFarlane, who has ridden Wree of the nine winners of the race, on Tehrana - a bay filly by t from Ambar trained at S?^£ s >T e 5 rana easiiy won a maiden race at Masterton on October 8. No other jockey has won the race more than once. Reformed is the only South Island in * field of U for the Rimu Hurdles. He has done nothing of note gy he won against the hack hurdlers on the first day of the Grand The logical favourite is Northcliffe, a fast-closine second to Prince Spi last week. Useful Hack Stayers « A South Island victory looks a gronger possibility in the Heretaunga s ac^-A Han S cap - Wairoa-trained X* Vite win probably be favourite on me strength of his win over a mile on the first day, but he should be S® 1 terted by Trajan. Sir Gerald, and Mandrake. from Riccarton, and Sir Gerald, from Wmgatui, were two of the hrat hack stayers at the Dunedin «prmg meeting, and were first and •econd over 11 furlongs on the second u A?* conditions will suit both of them. N. Eastwood, who won this race lasi year on Half-a-Crown, will ride Trajan Sir Gerald will be ridden by W J Broughton. Doubtful Starter A start for the Riccarton three-yea rpld Lochie in the Belmont Handicap . . N - Eastwood will ride oetectif Lochie does not run. The chance of a win for Hawke’s Bay looks bright with Yoho and India engaged. Yoho was not tested in winning over seven furlongs last Saturday, and a mile should not trouble him. India has been pitted against some very good gallopers this season. He jraa, runner-up to Syntax in the Bay Guineas, and was third sahind Coleridge and Ark Royal last Saturday. It will be surprising if he fhfla to run well. Rise and Shine was scratched for the Belmont Handicap at 2 pjn. on Thursday. Trentham had rain on Thursday night and showers yesterday morning, but the weather cleared in the afternoon. The track will be easy. . N.Z. YEARLING SALE.

AUSTRALIAN BUYING RESTRICTED

T Australian imports of yearlings from the New Zealand sales 'next January will be restricted, says the Canberra corresponden* of the “Sydney Morning Herald/’ This will be- the -first restriction since January. 1953. -when Australian buyers excccded the £40,000 exchange quota which then applied, and some buyers had to leave their yearlings in New Zealand. No limit was imposed in 1954 or 1955, and import licences were granted on evidence that yearlings had been bought for shipment to. Australia. . No decision has been taken on the amount by which imports will be cut for the coming sales, but the total purchases not likely to be less than the £40.000 limit, imposed in 1953. The Government has given instructions that yearling imports miist be reduced, because it would be unfair to allow free imports of horses, while virtually every other import is limited. Import licences will be issued only to tho» importers Who brought in horses earher this year. They will be allowed to import in proportion to their earlier purchases. - ... „.^H? tralians P ald the record sum of 9L33ogns for 124 lots at the 1955 sales last January.
