CAMPBELL ISLAND STATION
NEW BUILDINGS TO BE ERECTED
A new permanent station is to be erected on Campbell Inland to replace the present buildings, which arfe a survival of war-tirtie coast-watching days, according to the latest issue of the Antarctic News Bulletin. The site is Beeman Cove, about a mile from the present site in Tucker Cove. Recent observation parties have built a stores shed and jetty at the new site, and a winch and crane have been fitted up. The main advantages of the new r»te is that there is deep water close inshore, it is relatively flat, and sheltered ground, and radiosonde and other scientific observations will be more practicable. The main buildings to be erected next year are a hydrogen generating hut and a generator shed behind the jetty. The foundations will also be laid for an ionosphere hut, a technical building, and a domestic block. It will be necessary to build a railway from the jetty to the camp site, which is 200 feet higher. It is proposed to include two carpenters in the relief party, towards the end of this year, who will assist in the laying of foundations, and early in 1957 a construction gang will erect the prefabricated buildings.
