U.N. SECURITY COUNCIL

“Bitter Contest For Seat” \ (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 19. The United States Government has made high level representations to Britain to switch its support from Jugoslavia to the Philippines in today’s resumed election for a seat in the United Nations Security Council, it was learned from reliable sources today. Britain has resisted the pressure, it was stated, and has told the United States that it cannot change its position in favour of Jugoslavia. The Soviet Union is backing Jugoslavia, which emerged last week as a compromise candidate in the bitterly-fought contest on whether the seat should be occupied by an Eastern European country under a 1946 agreement regarding geographical distribution of the six non-permanent places. The Soviet Union originally sponsored Poland, which was then challenged by the Philippines, which had energetic United States support.
