SOUTH ISLAND AUTONOMY
Sir, —The people of the South Island are stirring from the apathy which has enveloped them of recent years, and they are entitled to look to their daily paper for support. But after reading your article, “The Little County,” I begin to understand the reason for our apathy: the fact that “The Press” discourages any movement which is contrary to the views of the editor. Apathy has also been engendered by the habit of _ “The Press” of excising important portions of correspondents’ letters, rendering such letters weak and futile. We admire Douglas Cresswell and Sir Ernest Andrews for broaching the subject of automony for the South Island, but would that they went further. Complete automony is strongly desired by most South Islanders, and despite your disparaging comments we shall work to achieve our aims.—Yours, etc., REVEILLE. October 14, 1955.
