NEW BRIGHTON SANDSPIT
RESIDENTS’ CHOICE
.. OF NAME SOUTHSHORE FAVOURED Ratepayers in South Brighton feel very strongly that the area known as New Brighton Sandspit should be officially named Southshore. The name Southend. suggested by the Christchurch City Council, is not favoured. A resolution to advise the council of the attitude of residents in the area was passed unanimously at a meeting of the Southshore Ratepayers’ Association on Monday. The meeting xyas a special one called to consider a request by the association that Southshore should be given official recognition.
“The council’s view that the name Southshore is not truly indicative of its character, the area not strictly speaking being the south shore, and its alternative suggestion of Southend were discussed at a well-attended meeting.” said the chairman of the association (Mr P. J. Skellerup) in a statement to “The Press” yesterday. “Members pointed out that the City Council was really splitting straws as other place names in and around the city were also not truly indicative of the districts. Southend lacked in appeal to our members, who over the last 10 years had known the area as Southshore, which also had some historical justification, being the name of an early subdivision made about 1918. Several letters from members unable to attend were read to the meeting and in each case strong support for Southshore was expressed.” High Pressure Water Supply A letter from the Christchurch City Council was received advising that it was expected work would begin on the extension of the high pressure water supply very soon. Progress would depend entirely on the nature of the land in which the extension would be made. Members endorsed the names approved by the Christchurch City Council for the six crossroads bisecting Rocking Horse road as follows: Caspian street. Godwit street. Heron street. Penguin street, Plover street, and Tern street. Advice was received from the council that because of the complaints about dust a recommendation would be made for sealing to be carried out during the coming season. “In view of flooding of sections along the estuary side of Southshore during excessively high tides a few months ago, it was agreed that this association should urge the Christchurch Drainage Board to take over the control of the Estuary.” said Mr Skellerup. “If spoil from dredging in the Estuary could be used to build up the low-lying land reserved for reading purposes, property owners would not’be compeled to face flooding which occurred during very low barometric pressure every few years. “The Estuary is one of Christchurch’s finest potential assets only awaiting development by dredging and flood gates at the mouth to convert it into an aquatic and scenic attraction,” he said.
