GOLF
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND. October 5. The foursomes event, the first of the 1955 New Zealand championships, was postponed today after one round, because of rain. The remaining round will be played on Sunday morning. The Auckland Golf Club’s officials permitted the event to start, although heavy rain was falling on the Middlemore course, after a steady downpour yesterday. The rain stopped about midday, but the officials decided that play in the afternoon would cut- up the course and mar the succeeding six days of competition. The leaders are the Australian professionals. N. G. Von Nida and his protege, B. C. Crampton. In spite of the appalling conditions, they played a scratch round of 72, three strokes better than the Hamilton amateurs. D. L. Woon and R. H. Glading, and W. W. Smith, of Titirangi. and I. B. Cromb, of Christchurch. The Australian professionals, S. J. Cowling and J. Kelly, and T. J. Jeffrey, of New Plymouth, and W. B. Reilly, of Miramar, scored 76. The title holders, B. M. Silk, of Wanganui, and I. A. Ewen, of Hutt, who had record rounds of 67 and 70 in summery conditions last year, finished with a dismal 83. However, the scoring was extraordinarily bad. largely because the course had been extended to make it
