BUS SERVICES IN CHRISTCHURCH

Drivers’ Refusal Of Overtime

“BOARD ARRANGING TO MEET SITUATION ”

“Arrangements are being made to meet the situation, and it is hoped to inconvenience the public as little as possible,” said the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) when asked yesterday whether the decision of the New Zealand Tramway Employees* Union not to work overtime from next Monday would require a major overhaul of the board’s timetables. Mr Fardell said every effort would be made to meet all present timetable requirements, but the workers’ trips would be the first consideration. The public would be informed of the board’s plans at the earliest opportunity, he said.

AUCKLAND CUTS SERVICES

WEEK END RUNNING TO CEASE

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 14. None of the Auckland Transport Board’s tram, trolley-bus, or omnibus service will run next Sunday. Services are likewise cancelled for all subsequent Saturdays and Sundays until further notice. This action was decided on by the board today after the Tramway Union’s ultimatum that no voluntary overtime will be worked from Monday next, September 29. It is to hold until the dispute is solved. Normal services, including those to the Rugby football test, will be run this Saturday. No alterations are intended to the week-day services. Asked what was meant bv the words “until the dispute is solver . ’ a spokesman for the board said that this implied until manpower was available to run the week-end services. It is believed that the loss of weekend work, which is paid for at time and a-half and double-time rates, will cost the tramwaymen an average of about £3 each. For the board's part, week-end revenue is light.

CURTAILMENT IN DUNEDIN

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 14. Dunedin transport schedules will be curtailed to a degree as a result of the New Zealand tramway employees’ decision to ban overtime from Monday.

However, there would not be any curtailment of peak period loading, the chairman of the Dunedin City Council transport committee (Cr. J. A. Stead) said today.

The adjusted schedules would operate as long as the employees adhered to their decision.
