DISPLAY BY W.E.A. CLASSES

Interesting Range Of Exhibits CONCERT IN LATIMER HALL The keen interest taken by students of the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association in the classes they attend during the year was shown at an end-of-class display of work held in the Latimer Hall yesterday afternoon, and also at a concert last evening. The gatherings have become a special attraction in the community life of Christchurch. If one could judge from the number of persons present and the interest they took ir: the wide variety of exhibits and items the display has this year lost none 0.l its popularity. The hall presented a colourful scene. On the walls were examples of work in water colours and oils, as well as charcoal and pen, done by the sketch club, and painting scenes. Below them, on stands, were felt and straw hats in many styles and colours, and summer frocks, coats, and clothes for children, made by the millinery and dressmaking classes. The horticulture class exhibits showed ingredients used in the preparation of soil for potting plants and the propagation of seed. The growing of shrubs and plants from cuttings was also explained. Floral arrangements by members of the home floral decoration class, and a woodland garden with miniature plants set in moss, arranged by the W.E.A. gardening group of the Papanui Community Centre, created considerable interest. Literature used by the Esperanto class, a booklet compiled by the creative English class, and books explaining the place of literature in society were attractively displayed. Items on the concert programme, which were introduced by the tutor of the class, included songs by the Maori language and Esperanto classes readings of original work by the creative English class, musical items by the recorder group, songs by the choir, a olay by the drama class, a sketch by the French class, an impromptu debate by the public speaking class, and a mannequin parade by members of the dressmaking and millinery classes.
