DAMAGE BY HORSES AT SHOW GROUNDS

COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER REGULATIONS Horses running on the Show Grounds during the winter had caused a good deal of damage, said the secretary of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr H. M. Studholme) in a report to the association’s general committee yesterday. The worst offenders had been several trotting owners who brought between 15 and 20 horses on to the ground late in the autumn for temporary accommodation. It appeared that only one of these men had permission to use the ground, and the rest just followed him through the gate, said Mr Studholme. They were asked to move early in July, and later were told to move,’ but without effect. Finally they were given a week’s notice to leave before their horses were impounded. The ground had been fairly badly poached round the boxes and in the alleyways through the sheep pens, and the sheep pens themselves have been knocked about, said the report. A number of horses belonging to members had also been on the grounds from time to time, and they had added to the damage. On the recommendation of the finance committee, the grounds committee will consider regulations about horses on the grounds.
