ADDINGTON MARKET

MOST FAT SHEEP TEND TO EASE

Weak Demand For Stores

FAT CATTLE VARIABLE An over-supply of fat wethers at Addington yesterday led to a discount in values. Fat ewes, however, appeared to hold their ground. A larger yarding of fat hoggets was absorbed at somewhat reduced prices, but the market was sound nevertheless. The market for store sheep was weaker, because feed on the plains is not yet available in sufficient quantities to instil confidence into buyers. The sale of fat cattle was generally a sound one. but for both steers and cows values showed a variable tendency. STORE SHEEP The demand tor store sheep lacked strength, due probably in tne main to buyers waiting for more evidence of spiing growth. Passings were fairly frequent, and at the end of the sale there was only a handful of spectators. The yarding totalleo 4900 nead, compared with sibs last week, and it included 1*152 wetner hoggets, 1397 ewe hoggets, 65 mixed sex hoggets, 1270 ewes ana lambs, 371 ewes, and 4UO wethers. Wether hoggets were forward in larger numbers, ana again there was a high proportion of shorn sheep. For shorn sorts the demand continued at a reasonably sound level, although rates tended to be from par to a shade easier. The best sold from 51s to 58s 6d, medium to good at 40s to 48s, and others down to 30s. The top price was paid to P. H. Read (Ashburton), who sold 73 Romneys at 58s 6d. The same vendor received 50s for another 88 shorn sheep. Other sales of shorn wether hoggets included: on account of J. L. Morrison (Waimate), 70 at 575; Martin and Blatch (Oxford), 84 halfbreds at 535; A. E. Thompson (Aylesbury), 132 halfbreds at 44s and 70 at 34s 6d; C. D. Rudd (Halkett), 167 halfbreds at 40s and 85 at 30s.

The best of a small selection of woolly wether hoggets ranged from 65s to 72s 6d, with others realising down to about 495. At these prices they were selling at about I late rates. Sales included: on account of j R. W. Ensor (Fernside), 23 at 72s 6d; R i Chamberlain (Burnham), 140 at 70s. I Ewe hoggets met a less buoyant sale and were easier by about Is to 1» 6d. The tops made from 81s to 91s, with good at i 70s to 80s, and others at down to 50s. i Eighty-one Romneys from J. R. McCully i (Seadown) made 91s, and J. A. Baxter (Sheffield) was paid 90s for the tops of 1 331 halfbreds, which sold from 70s 6d upj wards. For 62 Romneys M. A. Smith I (Russell's Flat) obtained 86s. l*or ewes and lambs, of which there was ! the largest yarding so far this season, the i market had a rather dull tone and prices : were markedly easier. The weakness was accentuated by the quality, of the offeri ing, which was made up in large part of | oldish ewes with lambs of below the most j attractive sort. This type was hard to sell, and passings were fairly frequent, t with values generally down by 3s to 4s. The few good pens still sold fairly well, i but they, too, were a shade easier. The I best ewes and lambs sold from 38s to 445, ' medium 28s to 325, and others at 18s to 22s i 6d. The top price went to I. M. Watson I (Weedons), who sold 39 three-quarterbred i ewes and 40 Southdown-Border Leicester i cross lambs at 44s and another pen of 41 i ewes and 41 lambs at 425. A. M. Master- . ton (Courtenay) secured 38s for 57 Romney ewes with 62 Southdown cross lambs j at foot. The in-lamb ewe and wether offerings I were very small, with few quotable lines. ' A handful of one-shear wethers from R. !F. White (Hororata) raised 71s, and 42 shorn halfbred two and four-tooth wethers from Martin and Blatch (Oxford) sold at 51s. SPRING LAMBS Only 14 spring lambs were penned, and one or two of these were inclined to be a bit heavy for the trade. Last week's entry was 27. The market was topped by W. A. Waddell (West Melton) with a sale of one at 88s Id. Best lambs sold from 82s Id to the top price and others from 69s Id to 77s Id. Sales included:— National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., sold: on account of Blackwater Estate (Lakeside). 1 at 82s Id. H. Matson and Company sold: on account of Miss J. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Ltd., sold: on account G. D. Watson (Oxford), 1 at 71s Id; H. L. Frampton (Wakanui), 5 at 83s Id. FAT HOGGETS The entry of fat hoggets was 1033, compared with 745 last week and 633 the previous week. This sharp rise in yarding* had son e reaction cn prices, which were generally lower than last week, shorn hoggets being particularly affected. Nevertheless, it was a good, sound sale j except in the closing stages. Over all the ' price drop might be quoted as between i 3s and ss. Top price for the market was 99s Id, which was paid to W. E. Martin (Kaia- ! poi) for seven hoggets, as against last i week's top price of £5 5s Id. Shorn hog- I ! gets sold up to 74s Id. which was realised by W. J. McCully (Seadown) for four sheep, and J. H. Syme (Darfieid) sold j eight at 73s Id. FAT SHEEP At 4045 the entry of fat sheep was nearly 1000 up on last week's tally of 3103. Shorn sheep predominated. The market lor wethers was oversupplied, and values suffered accordingly, all classes being down by 8s to 10s a head. Heavy-weight sorts especially were affected, and these were largely neglected, passings being frequent. Indeed, an appreciable number of good sheep failed to command any attention. On the other hand the demana for ewes was good and all classes met a free sale, although prices eased slightly by comparison with last week’s good rates.

L. C. Lemon (Killinchy) topped the market for woolly wethers with a sale of 9 at £5 3s Id. and J. Muckle (Rakaia) sold 8 shorn wethers at 76s Id, his line of 45 averaging 74s Id. D. J. DAIRY CATTLE The entry in the dairy cattle section returned to normal proportions with about 50 to 55 head yarded, but the quality was again mixed. For the better class cows and heifers values were fully up to last week’s rates to a shade better, but there was no material alteration in the market for rough and derelict sorts.

Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold from £lB to £27, medium £l2 to £lB, and rough and inferior down to £6. Best heifers realised £l6 to £22, with a few good Fricsians selling at £25 to £27 10s, medium £ll to £l5, and rough sorts down to £3 10s. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was a little larger than last week, but quality was not quite so good. For the best quality pigs values were 4s to 8s a head better. The small weaners and roughish stores sold at values comparable with those of last week. Two sows with litters, one of six and one of seven, made £l9 and £27 respectively. Values were:— Small weaners, 52s to 625. Best weaners. 75s to 85s. Slips, 85s to 925. Smalt and medium stores, 90s to 100 s. Large stores, 105 s to 117 s.
