TAXIS AT TROTTING MEETING

Sir, —With reference to Mr G. P. Kellar’s reply to my letter about taxis at the recent New Brighton trotting meeting, his answer does not satisfy me. He says they were on private property. Whether that is so or not, the public still have the use of that property, and those taxis were for hire, so for the clarification of the position so that the public will know, will Mr Kellar give a straight answer and say whether the taxis were for general hire. It seems to me, Mr Kellar is just simply trying to keep on side with the taxi men over their refusal to take another fare.—Yours, etc., EDWARD H. C. BARTLETT. September 9. 1955.

[“ln my original reply I made it quite clear that taxis on hire at the gates of the New Brighton racecourse can only be engaged to return to the city at individual fares, also that should the correspondent require a taxi it would be necessary for him to hail one on the public highway or obtain one by telephone from the city,” said the Traffic Superintendent of the Christchurch City Council (Mr G. P. Kellar).]
