New Zealand seamen have formed a social club—membership now more than 400—to prove to the public that seamen, like workers in other trades and occupations, are decent, hardworking, able-bodied men willing to fit into any community. The aims of the club, called the New Zealand Seamen’s Social Club, are to provide social, cultural and sports activities for seamen when they come ashore, to arrange outings for handicapped children, and to foster better relations between seamen and the local residents at ports of call. The club expects to raise about £6OOO within the next few years to build a modem clubroom in Auckland. In the four months the club has been functioning, more than £4OO has been raised for I this purpose.
