UPSET AT SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, Sept. 1. There was an upset in the South Island and Otago badminton men’s singles championship tonight when the third seeded player, A. T. Skelt, of Invercargill, who is a member of this year’s New Zealand Thomas Cup team, was beaten by an unseeded player, L. R. Reid, the holder of the New Zealand junior title. Results were:—

Men’s A Grade Championship Singles.— Second round: G. Hinton beat H. B. Dawson, 18-14, 11-15, 15-4; A. L. Scott beat P. Forster, 15-5, 15-1; R. Reid beat W. Pritchard, 15-4. 15-6; A. Law beat C. O’Brien, 15-5, 15-9; A. Ives beat E. Cleveland. 15-10; M. Y. Abdullah beat R. Ogg, 15-11, 15-11.

Women's A Grade Championship Singles.—Second round: Miss A. Mackenzie beat Miss J. Hinton, 11-2, 11-7; Miss S. Field beat Miss P. Hayman, 11-0, 11-1; Mrs D. Hay beat Miss G. Cox, 11-8, 12-10.

Men s A Grade Championship Doubles.— First round: A. Ives and C. O’Brien beat M. Richards and V. Dilly, 15-10, 15-5; R. Reid and G. A. Pearce beat J. Lush and W. W. Fox, 15-8, 15-4. Second round: A. L. Scott and A. T. Skelt beat Ives and O’Brien, 15-6, 15-4; Reid and Pearce beat H. Dawson and J. Swan, 15-4, 12-15, 15-3. Women’s A Grade Championship Doubles.—Second round: Miss A.
