ADDINGTON MARKET

BETTER SALE FOR FAT CATTLE

Larger Entry Of Fat Sheep FAT HOGGETS IN BRISK DEMAND Although, on the whole, fat sheep values did not reach last week’s good prices, yardings in this section met a reasonably good sale at Addington yesterday. Fat hoggets appeared to be about firm on last week’s satisfactory rates. In the store sheep section, good ewe hoggets sold freely up to 93s 6d. With an appreciable drop in yardings, fat cattle recovered the drop in last week’s values and, in the end, the market showed some firming on the prices of a fortnight ago. STORE SHEEP The store sheep offering totalled 3147 bead, compared with 4199 last week, and iit included 263 wether hoggets, 740 ewe hoggets, 315 ewes with 346 lambs at foot, 1156 breeding ewes and 327 wethers. The selection of hoggets was again limited, but it included a few pens of outstanding ewe hoggets, which met a ready sale at up to 93s 6d, and for these values looked to be about 2s 6d better than late rates. The top price—93s fid—was paid for 95 Romney cross from I. Gillanders (Greendale), whose second pen of 75 realised 755. R. R. Gardner (Waiau) was also paid 91s for 70 Romney cross. a pd a second cut this vendor sold at 655. The pick of the ewe hoggets sold up to 93s 6d, with good at 68s to 755, medium 57s to 655, and others down to 34s 6d. One hundred and twelve shorn three-quarterbreds fetched 34s fid. The feature of the wether hogget sale was the auction of two pens of shorn sheep from Estate E. Frizzell (Swannanoa). The top pen of 80 reached 575, and another 103 sold at 48s 6d. These raves were particularly satisfactory to the vendor, but auctioneers considered that they were not a true indicator of the value of comparable sheep. J ew other wether hoggets on offer the best made from 61s to 695, and others sold down to 455. Twenty-eight from the estate of D. Fechney (Aylesbury) found a buyer at 695, and another 18 from -£• £ a |S er ( , Weat M P«on) were sold at oss. At these levels prices were roufihlv on a par with recent rates. J __ El f ht pens of ewes and lambs sold from 32s to 40s, all counted. w The offering of in-lamb ewes was of ma * n Jy unattractive quality, and as a result the market did not show much life. For the few useful farmers’ sheep there was a good inquiry at up to late rates and for the balance there was a sale at rates in proportion to quality. FAT SHEEP At 4560 the yarding, of fat sheep was 595 up on last week’s entry. This increase in numbers led to some easing in overall values, but, on the whole, it was a. fairly sound sale, although it was. inclined to be erratic. Ewes seemed to be more affected than wethers. The sale commenced on an uncertain note for wethers, and some cases the drop appeared to be fairly sharp, but as it progressed. buyers exhibited more confidence. Inded, in the closing stages, valuer appeared to harden somewhat and in general the most the mahrket for all races could be written down was 5s to 6s. A lot of wethers sold at over £5. Ewes met an erratic sale, particularly early in the day, but the market improved and finished on a reasonably firm note. Prices might be quoted as down by about 2s 6d. The market for wethers was topped by J. H. Jebson (Sheffield), who sold six at £5 15s Id. his line of 39 making from 96s ld to the top figure; R. H. -Magson (Rakaia), 54 one-shear wethers averaged £5 9s 6d. Top ewe price of 75s Id was paid to J. C. Bruce (Hororata) for eight sheep. Values were:— Prime heavy wethers, to £5 15s ld. STORE CATTLE Afore interest is now being shown in the store cattle section, but entries continue to consist mainly of oddments of cattle of unattractive quality. As a result, the market continues to be fairly quiet. Sales yesterday included: on account of J. T. Smith (Kaikoura), 18 Hereford yearling steers at £l4 3s 6d to £l5 13s 6d. 5 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross yearling steers at £l4 18s 6d; on account of clients, one pen of rising three-year-old Shorthorn cross steers at £27 3s 6d, 10 in-calf Hereford cows at £l5 18s 6d. 6 yearling Aberdeen Angus heifers at £l3 8s 6d, and 6 yearling Aberdeen Angus steers at £l3 18s fid.

DAIRY CATTLE An exceptionally large entry of about 110 head came before buyers in the dairy cattle section. Most of the cows offered were of ordinary to rough quality, with a big showing of Jerseys, and prices for all classes were a shade easier than last week. The heifer selection was of about average size, but the quality left much to be desired, most being very small and of low condition. Little interest was taken in this sort, and sales could be made only at low figures. For the better grown and better type of cattle, the market was similar to last week. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold at £l7 to £26; medium, £ll to £l6; with aged and inferior down to £4. Best heifers realised from £l6 to £22: medium. £lO to £!5; and small, backward, and low condition, down to £3 10s. Veal sold up to late rates, with a medium-sized offering, including only a small proportion of really prime quality. Best runners realised from about £2O to £24 3s fid; medium, £lB to £l9 10s; good suckers, £l2 to £l4 10s; medium, £9 10s to £ll 10s; light and unfinished calves, £6 to £8 10s; and small calves, 50s to . £6 10s. FAT PIGS There was again a small entry in the pork section, and quality was reasonably good. There was an excellent demand for all classes, excepting the over-fat types. Choppers were forward in small numbers and the sale was a keen one, with values for best pigs up by 10s to £1 a head. In the bacon section there was also a small entry, and these sold readily at slightly higher rates. Values were:— Light porkers, £5 9s 6d to £6 9s 6d. Medium, £6 12s fid to £7 9s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 14s 6d to £8 9s 6d. Choppers, £8 3s 6d to £l5 18s 6d. Baconers, £9 4s fid to £lO 14s 6d. STORE PIGS The yarding of store pigs was the largest this season, but quality slipped considerably. The attendance of buyers was smaller, and values eased by 5s to 8s a head on most classes. Best quality weaners and slips, however, fully maintained last week’s good rates. Included in the entry were six sows with litters of seven to nine piglets, which ranged in price from £lO to £26. Values were:— Small weaners, 50s to 60s. Best weaners, 73s to 82s, Slips, 83s to 88s. Small and medium stores, 90s to 955. Large stores, 100 s to 114 s.

BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 31. Entries in all the classes at the Burnside sale today were well below those of last week. Prices were accordingly well above last week’s rates, and bidding was particularly keen throughout, with parts of the sale buoyant. The quality of the fat cattle was generally good, and better than last week’s display. In the fat cattle section, the number penned was 270, against 430 last week, and 385 the previous week. The sale opened on a firm tone to a shade better on last week, but gradually improved and prices reached the highest point of this season. Prices remained steady till the concluding stages, and values for all classes of cattle were better by fully £3 a head. In some cases, prime light -weight ox was touching £7 per cwt.

In the fat sheep section, the number penned was 1650, against 3400 last week. The sale was again particularly bright, opening at prices 10s to 15s above last week’s rates, and improving by at least a further 10s during the sale. The offering of sheep was good. There were a number of consignments of ex-cellent-quality wethers, as well as a fairly good display of ewes. There was a fair offering of store cattle and a fairly good demand, the prices being £3 to £4 better than last week, and the inquiry decidedly better. Runners and vealers were scarce, and also met with an improved sale. Baconers and porkers had an average yarding, and sold well up to last week’s rate*. Few store pigs were offered, and maintained late rates.
