SUNDAY AT HANMER SPRINGS

Sir, —At present, in the Hanmer Springs district we have on hire to the State Hydro-electric Department what is reputed to be one of the largest bulldozers in New Zealand. On the morning of Sunday, August 14, as the bells were ringing for the 11 o’clock services, this monster invaded the township and commenced clearing a private section within approximately 200 yards of both the Anglican and Presbyterian Churches. The job took one hour, which just nicely covered the period of the church services. If this crime was not deliberate, a more diabolical- example of bad manners would be impossible to find. And if there is no punishment by law for this sort of thing, a public apology from those concerned is surely due. Is the State Hydro-electric Department to foot the bill?—Yours, etc., PERMANENT RESIDENT.

Hanmer Springs, August 15, 1955. [Mr R. A. Burnett, of Burnett’s Motors, Ltd., Ashburton, the contractors to the State Hydro-electric Department, said yesterday that the work referred to had been undertaken without the knowledge of the management, which- wished to tender its apologies to all those affected. The necessary steps had been taken to prevent any future occurrence of this nature.]
