WOMEN POLICE
MORE APPOINTMENTS URGED In a statement in Wellington, where she is attending the bi-annual meeting of the executive committee of the National Council of Women, the Dominion president (Mrs T. H. Cumberbeach, of Timaru) said that the council would like more women police in New Zealand. She had seen the Assistant-Commissioner of Police (Mr P. J. Nalder) in Wellington about the council’s wish. “We want women police in Timaru, and I know similar centres do,” said Mr S. Cumberbeach. Two policewomen to a town, not one, were necessary, she thought. Forty years ago the National Council of Women had agitated for women police. Their introduction about 10 years ago had naturally gratified the council. The question of more policewomen will be discussed at the executive meeting, which opened yesterday morning and will last three days. Representatives are living at Wallis House, Lower Hutt, for the duration of the meeting.
