Miss M. Enright Bidden Farewell By “The Press”

Miss Mary Enright, lady editor of “The Press,” was bidden farewell by members of the newspaper’s literary staff yesterday afternoon on the occasion of her retirement. The editor (Mr P. H. N. Freeth), who presented a teaset on behalf of the staff, thanked Miss Enright for her good humour, tolerance, and loyalty over a period of 34 years. He said he was truly grateful, as “The Press” had reason to be truly grateful. “I have always been amazed at Miss Enright’s incredible vitality, energy, and enthusiasm,” said Mr Freeth. “In the good old days when a race week was a race week —races all day and parties all night—Miss Enright would work like a galley slave and emerge just as fresh and pink and charming at the end as when she started.

“She has found time in her busy life not only to take an interest in and report on women’s affairs —and many others as well —but also to take an active part in them. I don’t know that it is entirely complimentary to say that Miss Enright has

become an institution, but that seems to be the way it is,” he said. The manager of the company (Mr R. V. White) endorsed Mr Freeth’s remarks, and recalled his friendly association with Miss Enright over many years—both as chief sub-editor and manager. The news editor (Mr L. M. Aitken), in paying a tribute to Miss Enright’s work, said he had been constantly impressed by her journalistic vigilance. She had a fine sense of personal news and an “extraordinary knowledge of what was going on.” Last evening, Miss Enright was bidden farewell by the members of the news room and readers’ room staffs, and presented on their behalf, by the printer (Mr George Dorns), with a crystal vase. The Father of the Chapel (Mr W. Cull) paid tribute to "a gracious lady,” and Miss Enright, in her reply, thanked the men for their tolerance, forbearance, and courtesy over the years.

Miss Enright’s successor is. Miss S. Stramberg.
