GOOD WIN FOR AUCKLAND

BULLER BEATEN BY 13 POINTS (From Our Own 1 Reporter) WESTPORT. August 51. The Buller Rugby representative team, which had dons well in earlier .representative matches this season, was no matcn for the Auckland team in a game playea under almost ideal conditions on Victoria square, Westport, today, and were beaten by 19 points to 6. Only a strong wind in the first spell and part of the second hail spoilt the display. Buller led at half-time by 3 to 0, ana up to that stage it was dull Rugby witn the visitors taking some time to settis down. The strong Buller pack on whicn the district has relied this season more than held the Auckland forwards. In the second half the visiting backs improved their play to overwhelm the home team. Not on any occasion this season has the Buller rearguard been seen ih such a poor light, and their efforts to stop T. Lineen, at centre, and left winger L. Russell, lacked- spirit. The outstanding player on the field was Lineen. He scored two tries and made two, scored by Russell, who was also m brilliant form. One of Lineen’s tries was the best seen on Victoria square for many years. .He started from one side of the field. Close to the touch line, and finished 15 yards ‘ from the other flank to beat half of the Buller team. T. Edwards, playing at full-back for Auckland—his usual position is five-eightho —also impressed, and the five-eighths, A. McGee and N. Brown, algo went well. The Auckland pack did not seem to ue exerted in the early stages of the game, but later they met the Buller men with some good play. J. Skeen was outstanding in the line-outs, while A. Rasmussen also, played a splendid game in all departments. D. Ludbrook and H. L. White were also two very rugged forwards, w hue P. Hall was energetic in the loose. The Buller pack was again well led by G. Anderson, with support from the hooker, J. Duncan. J. Cockfield, and K. Crackett. B. Tyler, at half, and R. Burrow, -right wing, were the pick of a disappointing : Buller back line. For Auckland, Lineen and Russell each scored two tries, Brown kicked a fiela floal. and Edwards converted two tries. Anderson kicked two penalty goals for Buller.

N.Z. COLTS WIN AT

ADELAIDE FIRST MATCH UNDER FLOODLIGHTS (N-Z. Press Association—Copyright) ADELAIDE, August 31. New Zealand’s colts Rugby team had a tough second-half battle before they beat a South Australian team by 9 points to 6 at Adelaide last night. They played under floodlights on Norwood oval. Neither side had scored at half-time. T?he New Zealanders, playing under floodfights for the first time in the second match of their Australian tour, could not overcome the home side’s spoiling tactics in the first half. . Except for a unlucky attempt at a field goal by Frederickson, which failed, the New Zealanders never looked like scoring. The kick . hit . one of the uprights. Although the home pack played well in the loose, they Were not as strong as the visitors in the. scrum. The .giant New Zealand lock, Meads, spearheaded most of the tourists’ attacks With tiie strong support of McLenaghan and Thurston. Apart from the forward play, the game did not open up much until the second half was well under way. J. McEnaney found a hole in the defence and presented O’Sullivan with an open field. But a forward pass robbed them of what looked like a certain try. Well into the second. half, the points came with, a rush. The crowd appreciated the brighter play. New Zealand raced the score up to 9-3 when McEnaney scored a try and a field goal and O’Sullivan went over for a try. The conversion kick failed. South Australia replied with a try from Toohey. The New Zealanders, in the closing stages, appeared to be well up on the South Australians and gaining control of the game. But South Australia’s Davis scored an opportunist try in the last minutes. There was some dispute over the conversion by Thompon, and it was disallowed.
