Opinion Poll On Saar’s Future
(Rec. 8 p.m.) SAARBRUECKEN, August 31. Nearly 80 per cent, of the Saar population may reject the “European” statute for the Saar agreed upon between France and Germany, according to a public opinion survey by Emnid, one of the two leading West German public opinion institutes. About 74 per cent, of persons polled said that they favoured the return of the Saarland to Germany. Five per cent, were in favour of the present situation—economic integration with France. The rest were “indifferent.” The European Statute would place the Saar under a European commissioner to be appointed by the Western European Union until the German peace treaty was signed, but would leave the territory economically integrated with France. Emnid conducted the poll to test opinion before the plebiscite on the statute on October 20. Drinking Ban Strike.— -Butchers in the Antwerp slaughterhouse staged a one-day strike yesterday in protest against a ban on drinking on the job. The ban, they claimed, was out of keeping with the practical needs of their profession.—Antwerp, August 30.
