AERIAL EXPEDITION TO THE ANTARCTIC. —Fitted with skis in addition to landing wheels, a P2V Neptune long-range patrol aircraft of the United States Navy takes off on a trial run from an air base near Washington. This plane is one of 15 ski-equipped aircraft being prepared for use in South Polar regions. The chief United States air base in the Antarctic during the scientific operations of the next three years will be on the ice bay at the head of McMurdo Sound, and it has been reported that the American aircraft may visit the Christchurch airport in November on their way to McMurdo Sound.
