STATION BURNT DOWN
BUILDING DESTROYED AT BLACKBALL (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, August 30. The Blackball railway station was completely destroyed by fire early this afternoon. When the sole attendant, Mr A. Hayward, a station agent, returned from lunch he found the building enveloped in flames, and it was burnt to the ground within half an hour. A goods shed nearby was not damaged. About 50 years old, the wooden station was built when the railway was first put through Blackball. It measured about 45ft by 15ft, and included the stationmaster’s office, a public lobby, and women’s waiting room. Passenger traffic from Blackball was taken over some years ago by the Railways Road Services, and the station was used for administration purposes. Railway operations are controlled from a signal station, and the destruction of the station is not expected to have any effect on the rail services.
