PYLONS FOR POWER LINES
TWO CONTRACTS LET TO ITALIAN FIRM (New Zealand Press Association) m WELLINGTON, August 30. Two contracts for the supply of steel towers for high tension power transmission lines have been let by the State Hydro-electric Department to S.A.E. (Societe Anonime Ellettrificazione), Milan; Italy. These are the first such large contracts to be placed outside New Zealand for some years. One contract is for the line which will carry power from the geothermal steam station at Wairakei, through Atiamuri hydro station, to Whakamaru hydro station, from which the trunk high tension lines run Southwards. The other contract is for a much longer transmission line between sub-stations at Islington, and Kikiwa, near Nelson, and arises from the decision not to proceed with the proposed Braeburn hydro station, but to supply the Nelson area from southern stations.
Both lines will carry power at 220,00.0 volts, and the towers will be similar to those down the middle of the North Island.
