FISH FOR SHOP CAUGHT FROM BACK VERANDA

“The Press’* Special Service

AUCKLAND, August 29. . At Wally’s Fish Shop in Mangonui the owner catches fish off the veranda and sells them from the front. The fish are not small fry. either; 1410 snapper have often been hauled in. In the school holidays Mr Wally dams has his three children helping. Rosemarv, Ronnie, and John spend a great deal of their time fishing for fun and profit. When the fishing becomes a little slow near the shore Mr Adams goes out in his 35-foot launch to try further un the deep, beautiful Doubtless Bay.

I The fish business is not unprofitable in Mangonui (population about 230), although big catches wait just off shore for anyone who cares to drop a line. Wally’s shop sells all the fish he can catch, as well as crayfish caught I in pots near the rocks and big kahai wai steaks. I Mangonui is usually taken to mean : “plenty of sharks,” and the bay Jives up to its Maori name. The Adams cffrldren have hooked a 10-footer from the back veranda, and some wonderful sport can be had from launches.
