HAREWOOD AIR TERMINAL

NEW BUILDING PLAN APPROVED

“We can say now we are really on the way,” said Cr. T. H. Mcvombs, chairman of the aerodrome committee, to the City Council last evening, when he reported that the Cabinet and the Government’s technical committee had agreed to the glans of the air terminal building at .arewood airport prepared by Mr Paul Pascoe for the council. Cr. L. G. Amos said he agreed with the plans produced, but he would like the council to consider providing overnight accommodation at the airport. Nothing elaborate was wanted, but when £lBO,OOO was being spent on the building, it would seem that another £ 10,000 to provide emergency accommodation would not be out of the way. Cr. McCombs: More like £lOOO a room.

Cr. F. C. Penfold urged that the architect and engineer be sent overseas to see the latest developments in airport construction. Surely the Government officials would know of the latest develdpments, Cr. G. Manning said. Travellers would not be prepared to stay six miles out of the city, Cr. McCombs considered. He did not think it would be profitable for the council to provide accommodation. If officers were to be sent oversects, it would need to be shown that they would see things which were not in the regular architects’ journals, he said.

When the new terminal is completed, it will have accommodation for the Civil Aviation Administration. The present arrangement’ is for the council to meet half the cost of the building excluding the area which is to be available for the Government’s exclusive use. Last evening, the council suggested an alternative. If the Government preferred, it decided, the council was prepared to meet half the total cost of the building and to lease the part required by the Government.
